What is a mobile driver's license (mDL)?
An mDL is a state-issued driver's license stored in a phone's wallet app instead of printed on plastic. It's cryptographically signed by the issuing DMV, not a photo or screenshot. The patron presents it by tapping their phone or showing a QR code.
Do I need a separate system to accept mDLs?
No. mDL authentication runs through the same platform as physical ID authentication, at no added cost. Front-line staff get one verdict at the counter regardless of whether the patron hands over a card or taps a phone. Additional hardware may be required depending on your current setup.
What happens if a patron doesn't have an mDL?
Nothing changes. mDL adoption varies significantly by state, and most patrons still carry a physical ID. Customers can still authenticate physical IDs with our TrueAuthentication® module.
Which states support mDL?
A growing list of states and Puerto Rico issue a standards-based mDL under ISO 18013-5, the specification that governs how mobile IDs are formatted, signed, and verified. Coverage expands as more states roll out programs. Veridocs authenticates any mDL built to that standard, regardless of issuing state.
Is mDL data sent to Veridocs or stored in the cloud?
No. The mDL is authenticated locally on the scanning device using the issuing authority's public key.
Can a patron refuse to share their information?
Yes. The patron controls what's shared at the point of the tap or scan and can decline before any data is transmitted.
Does mDL authentication work with watch list checks?
Yes. mDL is compatible with both TrueListCheck® (screening at entry) and TrueListReview® (ongoing monitoring), the same as physical ID authentication.
Is there a record of mDL checks for audit purposes?
Yes. Every scan is logged, giving you the same audit trail as physical ID authentication.
Does the mDL module cost extra?
No. It's included free of cost for TrueAuthentication® customers. Additional hardware may be required depending on your existing reader configuration.
